Do You March to a Different Drummer?

Why my approach to wedding stationery begins with a love of simplicity, beautiful details, and knowing when to leave well enough alone.

Quick Answer: The Heritage Collection is built on restraint: clean lines, beautiful typography, subtle flourishes, and room to breathe. It’s back as a fully printed, full-service collection, and this is the thinking behind every suite.

The Heritage Collection is back, now printed and handled start to finish by me. Before you see the suites, I’d love to tell you a little about the taste behind these timeless wedding invitations. It starts at home

Picture a beautiful window, properly framed with architectural trim, with nothing hanging in front of it. The craftsmanship speaks for itself. The light comes straight through. Beneath it, warm hardwood floors. Around it, white walls, with color arriving through artwork, furnishings, and a few carefully chosen accents.

That’s my kind of room.

I’ll admit carpet has never been my thing, and drapes aren’t far behind. Not because there’s anything wrong with them, but because I’ve always been happiest when a beautiful thing is allowed to stand on its own.

When something is well designed, it doesn’t need much embellishment.

What Does Home Decorating Have to Do With Wedding Invitations?

Quite a lot, actually.

The same instincts that shape how I’d furnish a room shape every piece of stationery I design. I love clean lines. I love balance. I love beautiful typography, thoughtfully arranged on a page. And I appreciate a subtle flourish when it adds something meaningful.

What I don’t reach for is decoration for decoration’s sake.

You won’t find me filling every inch of an invitation with flowers, borders, and competing typefaces. Nor do I believe the couple’s names need to shout from the page in an oversized script.

Their names matter, of course. But beautiful typography doesn’t have to shout to make an impression. Sometimes the most elegant choice is simply to give the words room to breathe.

Do Timeless Wedding Invitations Have to Be Plain?

Not at all. There’s a real difference between something plain and something thoughtfully restrained.

A hardwood floor isn’t boring because nothing covers it. A window with handsome trim is interesting on its own. And a wedding invitation doesn’t need six typefaces and an abundance of ornament to feel special.

The beauty is in the proportions, the spacing, the paper, and the relationship between the typography and the artwork. A carefully chosen typeface can carry more personality than a page full of decorative lettering. A delicate botanical illustration can add just the right amount of romance without taking over.

It’s about knowing what belongs and, perhaps more importantly, what doesn’t.

What Makes Timeless Wedding Invitations Different?

When I created the Heritage Collection, I wasn’t interested in chasing trends. I wanted designs that would feel just as beautiful twenty years from now as they do today.

Each of the twelve suites has its own personality. Some are romantic and botanical. Others are quietly understated. Some embrace rich color, while others rely on the timeless elegance of black and white.

They all share the same foundation: clean compositions, typography I set by hand, carefully considered details, and a sense of balance.

I believe the paper matters. I believe the way an invitation feels in your hands matters. I believe the space between two lines of type can be as important as the lettering itself. Those small decisions are what turn a printed card into a keepsake.

Where Do Flourishes Fit In?

Don’t misunderstand me. I love a beautiful flourish.

I’ve spent countless hours selecting specialty typefaces and choosing their individual letterforms and ligatures. There’s something wonderful about the graceful curve of a letter or the way two characters connect.

But a flourish should enhance the typography, not become the entire performance. The same goes for flowers, color, and every other decorative element. Nothing should be there simply because there was an empty space to fill.

Does Restraint Mean One Look for Everyone?

Far from it, and this is why I’ve returned to working with couples personally.

Not every couple wants gold foil and swirling calligraphy. Not every couple wants minimalism, either. That’s perfectly fine. Good design isn’t about imposing my taste on your wedding. It’s about using sound principles to create something that reflects the two of you.

The Heritage Collection gives us the foundation. From there, we shape it together.

March to Your Own Drummer

I’ve always believed that if you follow the crowd, you lose yourself. That’s as true in design as it is in life.

Whether I’m looking at a room, a well-framed window, or a wedding invitation, I’m drawn to the same things: quality, proportion, simplicity, and details with a reason for being there.

Wedding stationery lets me turn those principles into something personal and tangible. Something a couple might tuck away and rediscover years later.

And if you happen to march to a different drummer, too? I think we’ll get along beautifully.
